Sherree was a dedicated mother, song writer, and musician. She was the owner of Shereca Publishing and taught song writing classes with Motown. Sherree lived lavishly and out loud traveling around the world performing both as a solo artist and as back up to several popular artists in the 1970’s. In the early 1980’s she fell victim to addiction and her life took a 180 degree turn. What was once a lavish lifestyle plummeted leaving her only child and family devasted.
April 18th,1992 after being estranged several years from family, her daughter received a call informing her of her mother’s location. Her daughter also in recovery sober 2 years at the time went to visit her with Big Book in hand. It was a 12 step call that would change both their lives indefinitely.
Sherree, by God’s grace, support of family, and the 12 steps process got sober and remained sober until her passing more than 2 decades later. Sherree became a Substance Abuse Counselor and spent her days working with men and women in recovery guiding them thought the 12 steps and into a new found freedom. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grand mother providing a stellar example of how the process recreates lives. Prior to her passing Sherree set out to establish “Hicks House Transitional Housing” which was cut short due to her sudden passing.
It is with great pleasure, admiration, and respect that I continue my mother’s dream. Her Grandson’s and I established the “Sherree Costa Foundation” to honor her, her mission, and her passion to help those wishing to recover from substance abuse, parents wishing to reunite with their children, and DV survivors.
